A novelist, journalist, socialite, botanist, explorer, and World War I ambulance driver, Julia Henshaw was a unique and colourful personality. This graphic biography follows her extraordinary life from Montreal to Vancouver, from the Rocky Mountains to England, and from the mining towns of BC’s Kootenays to the battlefields of France and Belgium. Her strongly expressed views of women’s roles and voting rights, of racial and class issues, and of Canada’s relationship to Great Britain and the USA are an illuminating contrast with the values of her contemporaries, and with society today.
It was and Michael Kluckner, history writer, artist and president of the Vancouver Historical Society, was busy researching for his latest book, Vancouver: The Way It Was , when he first encountered Julia Henshaw. He combed through old newspaper clippings, scanned records where he could find them, and pored over primary source materials from books that Henshaw had penned herself.
His collected findings are presented in the biographical graphic novel, Julia , which came out last year. Perhaps her greatest feat, explains Kluckner, was volunteering abroad during the First World War, where she was awarded the Croix de Guerre for her bravery in helping to evacuate people under shell fire and aerial bombardment.
The high-resolution newspaper facsimiles, and the dpi printing of them in the graphic novel itself, means they can actually be read with a magnifying glass. This is “history getting its voice back. But because independents don’t or can’t keep titles on their shelves, the quickest and most convenient way to get the book may be Chapters-Indigo online. It also has me the author as a recurring character — not at all unusual as witnessed by Art Spiegelman in Maus and the narrator in Persepolis , to name a couple of famous examples.
By filming their sculptures as props, and the gallery installation as set, each exhibition seeps into the next, creating the causes and conditions for the next film to germinate. An improvisational lightness permeates this selection. The earliest work, The Composition Kids , combines jocular compositions and make-shift assemblages that inhabit the Sicilian countryside.
The show premiered as a prime-time program on W Network in January In November , the series was planning to film in the Okanagan valley. In each episode of Love It or List It Vancouver , a couple or family is faced with the decision of whether or not their current home is the right home for them. With a list of what they would need to change in their current home, and what they would need in a new home, both hosts – a designer and a realtor – come in to try to help make the decision easier.
The designer attempts to win over the homeowners by renovating their current home, and the realtor tries to find them the home of their dreams. Jillian has a design team who works with her on each episode.
It was in the early days of the pandemic, and the local doctor shared a photo of herself in her personal protective equipment, a mask obscuring part of her face. The message, which Henderson also shared online, continued: “I realized the degree to which I communicate by expression, by touch, it’s all gone. Henderson, an occupational therapist and actor who is currently studying theatre as a post-doctoral fellow with Concordia University, had been transforming photos using an iPad app for years.
She also asked if anyone else on the page who wanted a similar portrait of them wearing their PPE. Right away, there were requests. Each image features a picture of a doctor, nurse or other health-care worker, wearing face protection and surrounded by bright, evocative imagery — oftentimes reflecting details about their own lives, and incorporating some of their favourite things.

Tinder and Bumble are not the only places where you can find your future soul mate. Gone are the days of starting a conversation with someone at a coffee shop or dog park and building a connection over your mutual love for Coronation Street and hatred of Nutella. Fewer singles are now meeting in public places, and the opportunities for random encounters are becoming a thing of the past. Apps like Bumble and Hinge have become the home for people who are looking for a significant relationship or temporary fling.
Despite being easily accessible and fostering numerous successful dates and relationships, these dating apps can be challenging for singles searching for a genuine connection. Why does everyone respond in overly mysterious, one-word texts?

Like many other 19th-century women intrigued by science, she was influenced by her father. A keen outdoorsman, he would be the author of a popular book on angling, and he spent much time with Julia, his youngest daughter, who developed an early interest in nature and open-air adventure, including mountain climbing.
By , for unknown reasons, Julia was no longer at home with her parents. In Julia married investment broker Charles Grant Henshaw. According to the Canadian Magazine she continued to write, and published articles in the Montreal Daily Star , although none has come to light. Three years later the couple and their daughter, Doris, took the train to British Columbia and settled in Vancouver. The west opened up new vistas for Julia. She found new subjects and markets for her articles while her husband worked as a commission merchant and served as a jp.
The Henshaws shared a sense of adventure and in British Columbia Julia was able to indulge her interests in botany, photography, and the exploration of uncharted territory, first in the Rocky Mountains and later by mapping part of the interior of Vancouver Island. In Henshaw began to write for the Province Victoria.
